Rotary Booth at Peacemakers Celebration Day on 24 February 2013

Make Peace

On 24th February, 2013, District Governor Kenneth Wong with a number of Rotary Presidents, Rotarians, and 10 young Peace Ambassadors participated in the UNESCO Peacemakers’ Celebration at the Hong Kong Science Park.

District Governor Kenneth Wong had kicked off the “Rotary booth “by delivering a short speech on this year‘s Rotary Theme: “Peace Though Service”. He emphasized on the importance of “Peace through Service” and encouraged each and every one of us to make peace in our lives and forthcoming service projects.

The enthusiastic Peace Ambassadors had designed a Peace Postcard platform at the Rotary booth to spread and collect the message of peace. It had come to a huge success that not only the general public had a chance to reflect on the meaning of peace in words and images, but also inspired us with simple ideas and visions on peace making.

The Rotary booth had attracted different members of the public, in which most of them were school children and parents. In around 6 hours, more than a hundred of
peace ideas were collected. On the postcards, children have shown their pure heart to us. In fact, the idea of peace is very simple to them, which means loving each other, holding hands together, and staying close with their family. On the other hand, some members of the public hoped that there would be no wars or disease in the world.

The Rotary booth with peace platform had highly fulfilled its purposes. More than a hundred of postcards were hung on the aforesaid booth. Some of the postcards with addresses written on would be returned to owners by mail in late March 2013, so as to recall the owners of what they had promised to achieve peace in the previous month.

Besides, an 8-minute video was presented in the sharing workshop that afternoon. The video was edited and written by Peace Ambassadors Angel Li and Curtis Mak. It had summarized the trip to Hawaii where 12 Peace Ambassadors attended the “Rotary Global Peace Forum “in Hawaii, Honolulu on 25-27 January 2013. Other than the sharing from different delegates, part of the remarkable keynote speech given by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was also included so as to give audiences a quick glimpse and idea for her visions on peace.

After that, Peace Ambassadors Rothia Chao, Flora Chiu, Jenny She and Estelle Lam had shared their experiences in the workshop of what they have learned in different workshops and plenary sessions from the “Rotary Global Peace Forum”. Feedbacks from audiences were highly positive and all the Peace delegates were encouraged to share the concepts and ideas on peace with different parties in order to spread and build peace in Rotary and to the public.
