THE ONE – Gala Dinner

Dear Rotarians,

Now in its third year, it is with great pleasure that I have the opportunity to write to you about a cause 
that is very close to my heart –THE ONE.

Over the last few years we have been blessed to have the support of many people who believe in our 
vision.  This year, I am once again looking to my friends and peers to support this extremely worthy cause.

THE ONE, a project of Rotary International District 3450, is a humanitarian award that looks to find that special 
hero of all heroes – a true healer and angel.  Not just a one-time hero, but an individual that wakes up every 
single morning and puts others before himself; a person who dedicates his life to help those in need to alleviate 
pain, suffering, poverty and hunger.  Someone who can inspire us and others around us to be the best we can 
be.  THE ONE is a person that truly embodies the Rotary motto Service Above Self.

I would like to request your generous support for our annual award gala dinner for THE ONE when we announce 
THE ONE for 2014. THE ONE gala dinner will be held at the Holiday Inn Golden Mile, Hong Kong on Thursday 
June 12th, 2014.

The evening is set to attract Hong Kong’s prominent socialites, celebrities, decision makers and entrepreneurs 
including THE ONE’s Ambassador Donnie Yen and wife Cissy Wan as well as our exciting  MC’s for the evening , 
Jocelyn and Anthony Sandstrom.

THE ONE has captured the hearts and generosity of our strategic partners including: Richard Elman who is donating 
US$100,000 to the winner, Dr. the Hon. Hari Harilela who is sponsoring the venue and Baccarat who is kindly producing 
a custom-designed trophy for THE ONE winner.  We also have the kind support of The Peter Bennett Foundation which 
is sponsoring a further US$50,000 for each of the runners-up.

Money raised from the evening will also be put towards an emergency fund for the finalists and their causes.

Last year’s winner was Valerie Ann Taylor whose good work in Bangladesh has been helping hundreds of poor and 
disabled people for 43 years.  She is in the process of building two hostels with the prize money to allow her to help 
disabled school-going children at a Center for Rehabilitation of the Paralysed. As well as a hostel for patients undergoing physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech & language therapy, provision of wheeled mobility aids and artificial 
limbs and orthoses. With the help of THE ONE, she has been able to help many people improve their quality of life.
